Keen sandals are waterproof. They have good grip on all dry and wet surfaces. They support well for a day hike with a backpack, and look good.
I tend to trip on a flat pavement and break my toenails. This doesn't stop me from walking off pavement. I like long full skirts, which dont look quite right with sports shoes, but I never more than tried on high heels or points, because I cannot compromise comfort for looks. All of the above limits my choices, basically, to brown sneakers often called hiking shoes. Lands' End has good descriptions of their models and a good usable size chart; they also accept return with virtually no exceptions. Their shoes typically cost between twenty five and fifty dollars, very affordable. However, their sandals didn't fit me. Random sandals from Marshall's didn't work, either, no matter a brand name on a tag.
By the time I walked into a sports and orthopedic shoes store I had an additional request. I used to carry my toddler son in a backpack all spring, and he wasn't, thankfully, getting any lighter by summer. So I needed sandals to support me with his thirty pounds on my back. My husband decided he wanted a decent pair of sandals, as well. I have a very thin and narrow foot, and his feet are wide and thick. We tried on Keen sandals and Teva sandals. Both have toe guards, adjustable straps across the foot, and some heel support. Both are available in water-resistant nubuck leather uppers or rugged nylon. Both have non-marking rubber sole with good traction and a good shape. Teva actually have a heel and an ankle strap. Teva comes in light and dark grey and in light lime green, if I recall correctly. Keen sandals come in more colors, and generally look more stylish, but the style was my last concern. Obviously, since both Teva and Keen sandals have such a contoured soles, what fitted my husband didn't fit me, and vice versa. He choose $78 Teva, with fuller foot and better support around ankle, and I choose $90 Keen Newport. He liked Keen sandals better, but their soles didn't fit him.
At $90 a pair, I wanted my Keen sandals to be perfect. Well, after a year of wearing this pair everyday I'm sure they are. Easily the best shoes I ever had.
